Christopher John Mitchell
I was born in Dallas Texas in 1975. I'm a military brat, the son of a career Naval officer. As a result, I lived in numerous places before college.. In order: Dallas, Idaho Falls, Virginia Beach, San Pedro, San Diego, Newport Rhode Island, back to Virginia Beach, off to Japan then back to Virginia Beach again. Moving around was challenging, but gave me the opportunity to see a lot of things and meet a lot of people I otherwise would not have... I like to think that it gave me a better perspective than I would have had.
For college, I attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It is better known as its now-official name: Virginia Tech. Most people know of us for our football team that reached nationwide attention due to the performance of Michael Vick (who has since disgraced himself.. thanks guy!). Like most VT alumni, I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to our football program. People have often said that they "put something in the water down there" as the football insanity seems to infect most everyone who goes there. As a result, from September to January my Saturdays are largely booked :). College was fun and at times quite... 'interesting'. I started off a Computer Science major but found that I became disenchanted with the focus of the program. Virginia Tech's CS program produces people who are well qualified to develop the type of really low-level systems that are extremely important to society and BORE ME TO TEARS. Instead, I switched into the MIS program where you get to instead apply programming to solving business problems and the like.

After college, I moved up to Northern Virginia and started my career. Over the past 10 years, I've worked for a variety of government agencies and IT companies, many of which have joined the ranks of the now-failed 'dot-bombs'. The IT industry is interesting... On the 'pro' side, its fun to get to work on a lot of different systems and see different ideas come to fruition. On the 'con' side, it is often frustrating to take orders from people who, in general, don't have a clue what they are talking about. Fortunately, I work for a great company (Omnitec Solutions, Inc.) so this situation generally doesn't apply to me.
As far as tech-hobbies go, I am interested in anything and everything science and technology oriented. I read things like Popular Science and Scientific American, although I often don't understand what the latter is talking about :). My DVR is always taping shows from Discovery, Discovery: Science, The History Channel, etc. I particularly like to see the integration of technology where you don't normally expect it. For example, a friend of mine and I installed a Macintosh Mini into my car, giving me portable MP3 and Wi-Fi capability (yes I know, I'm a geek).
Not surprisingly given my upbringing, I love the ocean and try to get to the beach as much as possible. Angela has recently gotten me into kayaking and canoeing and I hope to do a lot more of that in the future.
I'm not good at writing autobiographies, so that's about all I've got for now :).
